A JAILED private hire driver who assaulted a woman and children over eight years has been stripped of another licence.

Iftikhar Sharif was locked up for almost a year in January after a series of violent incidents.

Licensing chiefs in Glasgow, who banned him from driving private hires in April, have now suspended his car’s licence too.

It had expired in April last year, but a renewal application was being processed by the council’s licensing team.

The decision to remove his licence was made following a complaint from Police Scotland.

A representative for the force said the Chief Constable believes Sharif is “no longer a fit and proper person to hold the licence”.

She told the committee how he had been found guilty of repeatedly punching and kicking a young girl as well as pulling her to the floor and lying on top of her.

He was also convicted of assaulting a woman by pushing her and repeatedly punching and kicking her to the body.

The officer said Sharif was found guilty of shouting, swearing, abusive remarks, smashing plates and throwing food around on dates between October 2010 and February 2019.

And he assaulted a boy by striking him to the body with his open palm.

He was sentenced at Paisley Sheriff Court to 340 days in jail.

As a result of the convictions, Sharif has a non-harassment order for six years to refrain him from approaching or contacting four people in any way.

He has also been banned from entering an address in Paisley and one in Glasgow.

When Sharif lost his driver’s licence in April, Bailie John Kane, who was chairing the licencing committee, said: “This has been a rather shocking series of events covering a fairly substantial period of time, involving a fair amount of violence, particularly towards females.”

And Bailie Malcolm Balfour described the incidents as “quite horrendous”, adding: “Anyone who is violent at any level, particularly to women in this day and age, it just beggars belief.”
