Glasgow's Hillpark Secondary pays tribute to teacher Ged McKend

Ged McKend, a principal pastoral care teacher at Hillpark Secondary, passed away in his sleep on Tuesday, June 29.

The beloved educator, who ran the school’s Cairngorm house group, had only recently retired after a veteran decade-spanning career.

The Cairngorm Road school will prepare a memorial to the "legendary" teacher when schools return next month.

Geraldine Collins, headteacher at the school, said: "Our school community is devastated and shocked at the very sad news of Ged's passing.

“He's such an important member of the Hillpark community and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

“Ged had newly retired from our school, but I know that this would not have stopped him from keeping in touch as he lived and breathed school life.”

She added: “Our thoughts are with Jed's family at this sad time, and we will work together to plan a fitting memorial in the school for everyone to remember a very special man."

Mr McKend began his career as a languages teacher, specialising in French and German, before quickly finding his passion as a guidance teacher.

Former pupil Viki Leech said: "Proud ex-Cairngorm House Captain.

"Mr McKend will be sorely missed. Much love to all current and ex-faculty who worked with him and those of us who had him as a 'guidey', teacher, mentor, and friend."

While former colleague Eugene O'Neill said: "Ged was one of a kind.

"I had the privilege of working with him for five years and, in my 37 years of teaching, I have never seen a better pastoral care teacher.

"Ged, you'll be missed, mate."

Glasgow City Council's languages teaching group added: "Mr McKend was part of our languages family.

"A truly gifted linguist, great teacher, and integral member of the department.

"Keeping his family and our Hillpark family in our thoughts and prayers."
