QUESTIONS have been asked after a popular retail park was plunged into chaos during a spell of torrential rain.

On Sunday, multiple stores at Great Western Retail Park, including B&M, Starbucks and Sainsbury’s, were temporarily closed due to flooding within the car park area.

As previously reported, the site’s B&Q store was then also forced to shut as a “temporary leak” caused flooding within the shop.

A video filmed by customers inside the retailer showed rain plummeting through the roof as the floor filled with puddles.

Staff quickly evacuated the shop and rushed to cover electrical items as they tried to get the situation under control.

All retail locations and eateries are now fully re-opened.

The area’s councillors have now requested information as to why the site was so badly affected by the poor weather.

A spokesman for the retail park confirmed a part of the drain had “failed”.

The shopping venue uses a siphonic drain system for its car park, which uses gravity to pull away rainwater.

A specialist is now on-site and is working to diagnose the problem.

He added: “It’s our top priority to fix it as soon as possible and for it to be a long-term solution.”
