A GLASGOW Tesco store is set to close after reportedly making a loss on one of its flagship sites in the city.

Paul Sweeney, a Glasgow MSP, said on Twitter that negotiations between the supermarket giant and its landlord had broken down over the future of its Parkhead site.

It is not yet known how many jobs would be at risk in the event of closure.

Mr Sweeney said the store brought in less money than it spent.

He added: "The closure of the Parkhead Tesco is yet further devastating news for workers in the East End.

"It has been particularly disappointing to learn that Tesco have tried to negotiate a smaller store footprint but this has met with resistance from the landlord.

"I have offered my assistance to Tesco in finding a way to maintain a footprint in the area."

Tesco confirmed it had told its landlord, the Forge Retail Park Unit Trust, it would not be renewing its lease.

It's another blow for the East End of the city after we revealed that around 500 jobs were facing the axe at the Tollcross McVitie's factory.

A major campaign has been launched to save the imperilled site.

A spokesman for Tesco said: "We have taken the difficult decision to serve notice on the lease of Glasgow Parkhead Forge Extra. We realise this will be unsettling for our colleagues and customers.

“We remain in conversations with the landlord to explore alternative options which will allow us to continue to serve the local community.”

A spokesman for the landlord said: "We have been in discussions with Tesco for a number of months and looked at different options to keep them at the site, including offering a smaller store footprint, which we have always said we would be happy to accommodate.

"We look forward to continuing negotiations to find a solution that works for everyone.”
