Union bosses and councillors have joined the fight to save jobs at a major supermarket which has been earmarked for closure.

Hundreds of roles at Tesco’s Parkhead store face an uncertain future after it was revealed last week the Forge shop would close following a breakdown in talks with the site’s landlords.

As we revealed last week, the firm’s bosses are currently exploring “other options” but have yet to offer any guarantees to staff in the East End.

It is understood the shop will close in July 2022.

Now, the area’s representatives have pledged to do all they can to save as many roles as possible.

John Todd, area organiser for USDAW, the trade union for shop workers, said: “It is devastating news for our members working at Glasgow Parkhead Forge Tesco Extra that the store is under threat of closure in July 2022.

“We hope that ongoing discussions between the company the landlord can secure an alternative that will save jobs.

“In the meantime, we continue to provide our members with the support, advice and representation they need through this period of uncertainty.”

It’s reported that the Parkhead branch of the supermarket chain was running at a loss and could no longer be sustained in its current location. Since the announcement last Friday, a major campaign has been launched to save the site and the substantial number of jobs that would be risked by its closure.

It is the latest blow to the East End, following news around 500 roles could go with the closure of Tollcross’ McVitie’s factory.

Councillor Robert Connelly, whose Calton ward covers the store, said: “The news of Tesco Parkhead’s closure is total a hammer blow to both its staff and the local community, especially following the recent news of the McVitie’s factory closure.

“I’ve contacted Tesco and other councillors to try to arrange a meeting where we can discuss exactly why this is happening. We have been told by Tesco that although they will try to redeploy as many staff as possible they can’t rule out compulsory redundancies.

“We don’t want to see anyone completely lose their job, especially given that the closure of the store seems avoidable.

“We’re hoping to work together with Tesco and see what we can do to help with the situation.”

A spokesman for Tesco said last week: “We have taken the difficult decision to serve notice on the lease of Glasgow Parkhead Forge Extra. We realise this will be unsettling for our colleagues and customers. We remain in conversations with the landlord to explore alternative options.”
