WHO remembers Possilpark City Farm?
This little haven was a much-loved oasis in the north of the city until it had to close its doors in 1988.
Our photographers captured toddler Clare Wilson enjoying the climbing opportunities afforded by the animals’ pens at the attraction, and classmates Claire McRoberts and Alexander Pickering, both 11, helping with a massive replanting exercise, in the May of that year.
Claire and Alexander were pupils at Westercommon Primary School who had volunteered to rescue some of the flowers from the farm’s wildlife garden to replant them outside Possilpark People’s Hall.
(Claire does not look too happy with Alexander in this picture, although the photographer was not sure why…)
We also photographed Julie-Ann Cowie, 10, from primary five at Westercommon, who was doing her bit to help.
Possilpark grew up around the Saracen foundry.
It was the scene of extensive council house building in the 30s and 40s, amid plans to replace crumbling tenements in the city centre.

Unfortunately, the heavy industries in the area began to close down in the 50s, leading to unemployment and a subsequent rise in social problems and crime in the area.
The school closed a few years later and eventually burned down.

We would love to hear from you.
Were you a regular at the city farm? What are your memories of growing up in Possilpark?
