PLANS to repaint and repair three railway bridges in a popular South Lanarkshire suburb are set to finally leave the sidings.
Network Rail's £800,000 project in Newton, Cambuslang, will get underway next week with sections of the town's Station Road closing from August until December.
The improvement works are designed to extend the lifespan of the bridges by up to two decades.
Suzanne McKay, scheme project manager at Network Rail, said: “We’re investing heavily in our infrastructure across Scotland to allow us to continue to run a safe and reliable railway.
“The improvement works we’re carrying out at Newton are essential to extend the lifespan of the bridges for up to two decades."
Local road users are being advised that the area under the bridges on Station Road will be closed to vehicles from August 2 to December 17 to allow the required steelwork, grit blasting, masonry repairs and painting to be completed in the safest and quickest way to minimise disruption.
Vehicles will be diverted via Westburn Road/Hamilton Road/Hallside Boulevard/Village Road and vice versa. Pedestrian access will be maintained on Station Road.
Ms McKay added: “Some nightshift work is required to ensure our team can work in the safest way possible without disrupting train services, however, the noisiest element of our project – grit blasting – will be taking place during the day to ensure noise impact is kept to a minimum.

“And while Station Road will be closed for the duration of the works, the diversion route will ensure we can complete these works with minimal disruption and inconvenience to the community.
“We thank the community for their patience while we carry out these vital improvement works.”
