A takeaway boss in Glasgow has been doing his bit to boost the covid vaccination effort.

When the NHS and council set up a pop up vaccination site on Kelvin Way to offer young people the jag, the kiosk owner decided to help.

Tassos Anagnostou, who owns MacTassos Greek Gyros takeaway kiosk, on Kelvin Way, told all his customers about the vaccination site and sent many people across to get their jag.

And he also decided to give the vaccinators and staff at the pop-up site a free lunch to thank them for their work.

The vaccination site, staffed by the NHS and Scottish Ambulance Service, is open today until 4pm.

Glasgow Times:

It is offering first and second doses of the Moderna vaccine, targeted at people aged 18 to 39.

Tassos said he wanted to help out.

He said: “It’s very important to get vaccinated.

"If we all get it and get rid the virus we can get back to normal.

"I’ve been telling my customers about the site and I’ll keep doing it as long as they are here.

“And I’ve told the staff, lunch is on the house for them today.”

Tassos took some of his customers over to the site.

Ashlee McPhearson, was at the takeaway with two friends when she was told where the pop up was.

She said: “I had my First dose in Hawaii two months ago before I came to Scotland.”

Ashlee is doing missionary work with the Jesus Christ Church of the Latter Day Saints.

She said: “We have all been encouraged to get the vaccine.

“Tassos told us where to go. I think it is good everyone gets vaccinated to help the whole community to be protected.”

Marco Paska, 23, a bicycle delivery courier, got his first dose, also after Tassos told him about the site.

Glasgow Times:

He said: “I want to go back home to Slovakia later this year and don’t want to have to quarantine.

“The opportunity was here today without having to wait for appointment, so I got the jag.”

Staff at the site said there was a steady uptake throughout the morning.

Daniel Pollok, a vaccinator, said: “It’s been going well. It is another opportunity for people to get the vaccine.”

Maria Claasen, 31, a researcher at Glasgow University, said: “Everyone should get vaccinated.

Glasgow Times:

"I have just moved here from Italy and this was my first chance to get the vaccine. I was just passing and thought I would get it now."

The staff were appreciative of Tassos’ efforts and the generous lunch offer.

Declan Cairns and James Beatie took up his offer on a break from giving vaccinations.

Glasgow Times:

Declan said: “I know Tassos from before. He is a sound guy who appreciated that we are doing a job.”
