A FRESH bid is being made to form an East End community council and give the area a “strong voice”.

Nominations are currently being sought to establish a Springboig/Barlanark Community Council. The two districts were previously represented by their own groups but these have both been inactive for more than a decade.

Made up of 12 members aged over 16 and living in the areas, the body would have a say in Glasgow City Council decision-making and give locals the chance to speak directly to elected members.

John Mason MSP, whose Shettleston constituency includes Barlanark, said: “Areas with community councils are more likely to get their voice heard on planning, litter, and policing, for example, than areas which do not have community councils.

“Therefore, I very much welcome the plans to form one in this area.

“Hopefully a wide cross-section of the community can be represented on it. I accept that retired people may have more time on their hands, but we also want to see and hear the voices of families and young people.”

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: “It’s encouraging to hear there is keen interest from residents to form a community council for the Springbiog/Barlanark area.

"It would be of great benefit to the area. Community councils play an important role by providing a link between local authorities and local areas."
