IT is 100 days until Glasgow hosts the United Nations COP 26 summit.

World leaders from around the globe will be in the city where it is hoped a new agreement on tackling climate change will be agreed.

As past of the efforts, using the momentum of the summit Glasgow has signed up to take part in the Thriving Cities, an international initiative to deliver action.

The pilot programme will involve work in communities and with businesses to reduce consumption and create an economy without harming other people or the planet.

Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Glasgow is committed to ensuring that our transition to a more sustainable and resilient economy will create good jobs and opportunities for Glaswegians.

“As the host city for COP26, we must deliver a local legacy where all Glaswegians can lead healthier, fairer and more prosperous lives without harming other people or the planet. A Just Transition is particularly pertinent in Glasgow, given the memories and legacies of our post-industrial past.

“We look forward to participating in the Thriving Cities Initiative and the support it can provide in working with local businesses, communities and academic institutions to a create greener and equitable economy and communities.”

The Scottish Government has also set out its aims to contr meeting the previous Paris Agreement on climate Change.

Scotland has published a Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to preventing warming of more than 1.5 degrees, even though it is not a participating government in the talks.

Michael Matheson, energy and transport secretary said it was an statement of Scotland’s intention to play its part in the global effort.

It includes the 2030 target to reduce emissions of all major greenhouse gases by at least 75%, and how it will be achieved.

He said: “With COP26 coming to Glasgow, Scotland has a unique opportunity to show leadership on climate action on the international stage. I’m proud to publish this pledge, setting out how Scotland is contributing to the global aims of the Paris Agreement. By highlighting our own action, we hope to inspire others to raise their ambition.

“COP26 represents the world’s best chance – and possibly one of our last chances – to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. We are working hard with our delivery partners to make sure the event is safe and secure and to create a platform for agreeing decisive climate action.”

The COP 26 is due to take place in the first two weeks of November at the SEC, with the venue handed over to the UN.

US President, Joe Biden, Vladimir Putin of Russia and Xi Jinping of China, as well as Pope Francis, could all be in Glasgow for the world leaders summit.
