FIRE crews tackled a blaze last night after a large fire at a primary school.

Locals reported seeing plumes of smoke coming from St Mark's Primary School on Roebank Drive in Barrhead at around 9.00pm last night. 

Three fire engines were on the scene.

It is understood the fire was within the grounds of the school.

Scottish Fire and Rescue has confirmed there were no injuries.

Fire fighters battled the blaze for almost three hours, leaving just after 11.30pm.

A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "We were in attendance last night at a fire at a school on Roebank Drive in Barrhead. 

"We got a call in at around 8.53pm about a fire at the school in itself.

"Three engines attended. We left at 11.35pm.There were no casualties. There was a confirmed fire at the school and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service left after making sure it was extinguished."

Police Scotland has confirmed they are treating the fire as deliberate. A spokeswoman said: "We received a report of a fire on the roof of St Marks Primary School, Roebank Drive, around 9.30pm on Sunday, July 25.

"The roof sustained damage but there were no reports of any injuries. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing, which officers believe to be deliberate."
