East Renfrewshire Council has said that they will "assess damage" to a Barrhead primary school ahead of the return to the term after a fire broke out in the premises.

Police and fire services believe that the fire that damaged St Mark's Primary School on Roebank Drive at 9.00pm last night was set deliberately.

Locals reported seeing plumes of smoke coming from the school, with fire engines in attendance.

A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "We were in attendance last night at a fire at a school on Roebank Drive in Barrhead.

"We got a call in at around 8.53pm about a fire at the school in itself.

"Three engines attended. We left at 11.35pm. There were no casualties. There was a confirmed fire at the school and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service left after making sure it was extinguished."

Police said that the fire is being treated as "deliberate", with a spokeswoman saying: "We received a report of a fire on the roof of St Marks Primary School, Roebank Drive, around 9.30pm on Sunday, July 25.

"The roof sustained damage but there were no reports of any injuries. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing, which officers believe to be deliberate."

Council chiefs have now said that they will work with police and fire services to "assess the damage" caused by the fire ahead of the return to term-time next month.
