A MUCH loved city cinema has taken the number two spot in a list of the UK and Ireland’s top film houses.
The GFT (Glasgow Film Theatre) on Rose Street was pipped at the post by Dublin’s Stella Cinema in the Time Out poll.
Time Out’s global film editor Phil de Semlyen, who curated the list, said: “The first purpose-built arthouse cinema to be built outside of London back in 1939, the GFT is still flying the flag for indie moviegoing in Scotland, priding itself on its 35mm and 70mm presentations and diverse programming – including as a base for the annual Glasgow Film Festival."

The GFT, formerly the Cosmo, has played host to a galaxy of stars over the years, including Sean Connery, Janet Leigh and Ewan McGregor.
After being sold to the Scottish Film Council in 1973, the Cosmo reopened as the Glasgow Film Theatre on May 1, 1974, and continued the tradition of showing new and international films.
The only other Scottish cinemas in the Time Out top 50 were Edinburgh’s Filmhouse and Cameo, Aberdeen’s Belmont, the Highland in Fort William and The Hippodrome in Bo’ness.
