A flytipping site has grown despite it being reported by a councillor several times in recent months.

Bags of rubbish, piles of cardboard boxes and what looks like packaging from a catering business has been dumped on the corner site close to homes.

Gary Gray, Labour Canal Ward councillor, said he has reported the issue several times but the council has stopped communicating with him on it.

The council says it cannot clear it as it private property and it is the landowner's responsibility to clean up the property.

Glasgow Times:

The rubbish has piled up at the corner of Allander Street and Denmark Street in Possilpark.

It is on the site of a former old persons’ care home and the junk has been thrown over the high metal fence.

Councillor Gray said he contacted the council and was told more than once it had been dealt with.

However, the council has told the Glasgow Times it is not its responsibility to clear it away.

He said: “I put in a request for bulk uplift to remove it. When I got back in touch to ask for an update I was told it had been done. It clearly hadn’t and in fact it was bigger.

Glasgow Times:

“I messaged again and was again told in a response by email it had been dealt with. Again, it hadn’t.

“The last message I sent was four weeks again and nothing has been done.

“This needs to be lifted as it is getting bigger and bigger.2

The councillor said local people are fed up living with the unsightly mess and want it cleared away.

He said he is aware that services are stretched with finances and covid but some things should still be prioritised.

He added: “This is why people ask questions like ‘what are they paying council tax for?’

“I know the level of cuts is frightening and it will only get worse but we really need to be doing things like this.”

When the Glasgow Times visited the site we could see what looks like bags of household rubbish electrical appliance boxes and also boxes that would seem to be from a food business.

There are cardboard boxes for ice cream cones and drink cup lids, suggesting a cafe, takeaway catering business could be responsible.

There was also boxes for frozen chips and iceberg lettuce, pointing further towards afood and drink business.

The land, however is privately owned and the council said it is for the land owner to remove the rubbish.

They said that there would be investigations into who is dumping on the ground.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “This is not land that is owned or maintained by the council and so it is the responsibility of the landowner to remove this waste.

“We are seeking to make contact with the landowner to remind them of their responsibility to the Possilpark community and to the wider environment.

“We will also further investigate this incident with the aim of securing evidence that will help us to identify those guilty of this environmental crime and take the appropriate enforcement action.

“We urge anyone with any information on who has been dumping waste illegally at this site to contact our environmental health team.”
