GLASGWEGIANS are known for our love of nicknaming inanimate objects - especially buildings.

We've got the Squinty Bridge, the Squiggly Bridge, the Armadillo and the Clockwork Orange.

Now, a Glasgow councillor has fired the starting gun on the hunt for a nickname for the city's newest landmark.

Newly installed over the weekend, the bridge over the M8 connects Sighthill and Cowcaddens and has been hailed as reconnecting the north of Glasgow with the city centre.

But impressive though the giant, 58-metre, 2,420 tonne structure may be, it still lacks a proper Glasgow nickname.

David McDonald, deputy leader of Glasgow city council, took to Twitter yesterday to ask for people to recommend a moniker for the crossing.

Early suggestions included: the Rusty Bridge, the Irn Bru Bridge, the Shoehorn, Drochaid mac drochaid aghaidh (Bridge MacBridge Face) and the Wee Linky Bridge.

Meanwhile, an official competition through the council is being held to name the bridge.

Pupils and residents in Sighthill are being asked to help name the crossing.

Councillor McDonald added: “Members of the public can now get in touch with the city council who will decide the official name. The city region deal will also be part of the naming process.

“I look forward to seeing the new suggestions.”
