GLASGOW music legends Texas promised the start of things to come by putting on a show fans will never forget at St Luke’s tonight.

The band were in their hometown for one reason and one reason only - to mark the comeback of live gigs.

Playing in front of an intimate audience of 30 people, the Glaswegian rockers kicked off a series of live gigs for BBC Radio 2 with charismatic frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri, 53, screaming, “Does it feel good? We have had the Olympics, we have Wimbledon and now we have concerts.”

Glasgow Times:

Opening up with their 1989 debut I Don’t Want a Lover, Sharleen sounded in fine tune.

She beamed: “It’s been two years since I sung and played at this level.”

But you wouldn’t have thought it as Sharleen showed off her powerhouse vocals on hits Halo, Summer Son and Black Eyed Boy.

Glasgow Times:

A surprise duet with fellow Glaswegian star Clare Grogan - who was previously in Altered Images with Texas’ Johnny McElhone - was a real highlight.

The pair gabbed on stage before they launched into Look What You’ve Done Now Baby and cover of Altered Images hit I Could Be Happy.

Glasgow Times:

Sharleen, who was introduced onto the stage by Radio 2’s Ken Bruce, then wowed the crowd with the band’s biggest hit Say What You Want before impressing with an unexpected acoustic cover of Dexys Midnight Runners’ song Come on Eileen.

Sharleen screamed: “It’s good to be home.”

And boy were we glad to have her back where she belongs live on stage.

With no live music in the city for more than a year now, Texas set the standard high for the bands that are set to follow.

The show took place in line with Covid restrictions.

The performances will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds from Saturday, September 11, with a special highlights show on Radio 2 from 7 to 9pm on Sunday, September 12.

Live shows including Steps in Manchester on August 10, Manic Street Preachers in Cardiff on August 12 and Westlife in Belfast on August 26 are also coming up.
