A session of East Dunbartonshire Licensing Board has resulted in some changes for two local venues.

Kirkintilloch Town Hall can now sell alcohol at theatre and indoor sports events, unless taking place before 11am, having successfully applied for changes to its licence.

The indoor sports element includes exercise classes, indoor bowls and other activities whereas the inclusion of theatre is primarily to cover Christmas pantomimes as well as local performances at other times of the year.

None of the public bodies objected to the proposals and the board unanimously decided in their favour.

Meanwhile Milngavie Filling Station was granted permission to stock a selection of alcohol products for off-sales purposes, included within the range of groceries it already carries.

There were 16 objections from members of the public, largely concerning the number of outlets already selling alcohol to the public as well as fears of disturbances caused by under-age drinkers but these were addressed by representatives of Motor Fuel Limited, owners of the petrol station.

The company already operates more than 50 petrol stations in Scotland with an off sales capability  and adheres strictly to procedures designed to prevent problems.

These include a Challenge 25 policy and the use of “mystery shoppers” to ensure staff are properly observing procedures. Also, the alcohol products would not be in line of sight  for customers queuing to pay for petrol but would have to be sought out in the rear of the groceries section.

The board agreed to grant the application.
