A MAN who spat on his daughter's face during an argument in the street brought a packed holdall to court as he feared being sent to prison.

David Connelly attacked his daughter on September 7 last year on Spittal Road in Rutherglen.

The pair were with a third person when an argument broke out and the 48-year-old seized her by the neck.

Connelly then approached her and spat on her forehead.

When cops tried to take him to the station, he went to headbutt one of the officers.

Depute fiscal Jamie Grant told Glasgow Sheriff Court: "Police were contacted and attended and attempted to convey the accused to Cathcart police office, however the accused became hostile and attempted to headbutt the police witness."

When Connelly was cautioned and charged he said: "I'm sorry, I'm going to plead guilty, I shouldn't have spat.

"I lost it."

Connelly's defence brief said he has a "minor record" and one recent previous conviction that has left him on a community payback order.

She said: "He is carrying a bag with him because he understands how serious this is and how seriously the court takes it.

"He is a man who is hopefully at the tail end of a long drug addiction that started in his early 30s.

"He managed not to offend but that has caught up with him.

"He was under pressure from people in his local area who were asking him to do certain things.

"He moved address and that has assisted him and he has thrown himself into the recovery process.

"He has managed to resolve his relationship with his family apart from his daughter, who was the subject of this unpleasant attack."

Sheriff Charles Lugton said: "These are serious charges but you are doing well"

He deferred sentence for six months for Connelly to be of good behaviour.
