AN ITEM of interest appears to have been removed from the scene of a fire in which 999 crews spent have spent more than 13 hours.

Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service taped off parts of Bath Street and Sauchiehall Street following the early morning blaze.

The investigation appears to centre around a burnt-out item that was stood outside the Greggs store. The bakery giant has confirmed that they are aware of the blaze, but didn't have much detail.

The tall, metal object was then seen to be removed and placed into the back of a truck, which was behind a police cordon.

Officers guarded the area.

Other businesses affected included Primark, Sports Direct, an NCP car park and Bijoux Bar.

Nine fire engines and other specialist vehicles were sent to tackle the blaze at 4.20am this morning.

Two engines and several officers were still spotted at the scene 13 hours later.

It's not yet confirmed what the cause of the blaze was.

A spokeswoman for Greggs said: "We have been made aware this morning of a fire affecting our Sauchiehall Street shop. 

"We don't have much detail yet on the extent of the damage, but there are no injuries to report and emergency services are on site. Relevant parties will attend to assess once we have the all-clear to do so."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 4.21am on Wednesday, August 18, to reports of a fire within a commercial property in Bath Street, Glasgow.

“Operations control mobilised nine appliances and specialist resources to the scene and firefighters are working to extinguish the fire.

“There are no reported casualties.”

Meanwhile, a police spokeswoman added: "Officers are currently in attendance at a fire in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, which was reported to police at 4.40am on Wednesday, August 18, 2021.

"A cordon has been put in place and there are no reports of injuries."
