GLASGOW has been “shown up” by the state of its walkway close to the White Car River, it has been claimed.

The river travels from West Dunbartonshire, through Glasgow’s Southside before reaching Renfrewshire.

However, concerns have arisen surrounding the walkway through the Crookston and Mosspark areas which has “fallen into a state of disrepair”.

Grass and shrubbery has become overgrown, blocking the path for walkers and cyclists while the “old-fashioned hook-style” fence is rusted and broken in parts.

Meanwhile, Renfrewshire Council has been praised for its role in ensuring the area is a popular spot for those looking to enjoy their local spaces.

Councillor for the Cardonald area, where the river flows through Glasgow, Jim Kavanagh said: “We’ve really been shown up here.

"Much of the area’s community spaces remain closed and all people really have is the outdoors – yet they’re not up to par.

"This river flows through numerous areas and several parts look great, but the Cardonald ward isn’t great.

“More really needs to be done to preserve our outdoor spaces and this needs to be rectified for the people of Cardonald.”

It's understood there are different owners responsible for different parts of the walkway as it trails through three local authority areas.

An investigation is underway to determine which parts of the path Glasgow City Council is responsible for.

A spokesperson said: “There are paths close to the White Cart that do not fall within the council’s responsibility.

“We will look to identify the exact locations that have been highlighted, check on whether we have a responsibility for those places and take whatever action is appropriate.”
