A 10-YEAR-OLD boy that got knocked down by a car on a school run in Glasgow was an “accident waiting to happen”, a parent has warned.

The child had been on his way to class at Wallacewell Primary in Robroyston on Monday morning before he was struck by the vehicle.

Ambulance crews were prompted to the scene and escorted the child to the Royal Hospital for Children for treatment to his injuries.

Now, a parent of a child attending the school has slammed other parents’ and guardians’ parking during drop off and pick-up times.

They said: “The traffic situation is bad at the school. Cars park up both sides of the road while kids are walking down trying to cross over.

“He was sitting up possible broken leg, he jumped out his mums car onto the oncoming traffic and was hit.

“The traffic situation at the school was just an accident waiting to happen.

“There are just zig-zags at the gates, not the whole way up, but people will still park on them.”

Shortly after the incident, the school’s headteacher pleaded with parents to park responsibly and drive slowly around the primary - or walk when possible.

A post on Wallacewell’s social media reads: “This morning outside the school gate one of our pupils was involved in a road traffic incident.

“An ambulance and the police were called and attended the scene.

“The child has been taken to hospital to receive treatment but we are expecting a full recovery.

“I am sure all our parents and carers will be wishing the family well.

“We will continue to work with our children on all aspects of safety, including road safety and we would ask our parents to reinforce this at home.

“Can I please remind all parents and carers to park further away from the school and use the footpaths and pavements to walk wherever possible.

“If you are using the drop off area please park responsibly and drive slowly being aware that children and other pedestrians will be crossing roads to access the school.

“Please do not park on the zig zag lines or at the entrance to the school gate.

“Thank you for your support and co-operation.”

Glasgow City Council echoed the teacher’s calls to park responsibly while the local authority added that vehicles should not be parking on zig-zag lines.

A spokeswoman said: “A pupil was involved in a road traffic incident outside the school gates and was taken to hospital for treatment.

“We wish the pupil a speedy recovery.

“The headteacher has sent a communication home to families to remind them about the importance of road safety around the school and this will be reiterated to pupils during lessons.

“This includes a reminder to all parents and carers to park further away from the school and use the footpaths and pavements to walk wherever possible and if using the drop-off area, park responsibly and drive slowly being aware that children and other pedestrians will be crossing roads to access the school.

“Parents have also been reminded to not park on the zig zag lines or at the entrance to the school gate.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "At 9am on Monday, August 22, we received a report of a 10-year-old boy having been hit by a car on Standburn Road in Glasgow.

“Officers attended and the boy has been taken to the Royal Hospital for Children.”
