A MUM who is fighting for a dedicated miscarriage unit in Scottish hospitals is to be recognised for her campaign.

Louise Caldwell has been fighting for a separate space for women after experiencing her own tragic loss at 12 weeks pregnant - which was made all the more painful when she was informed she would have to deliver her child on the labour ward surrounded by happy families and newborn tots.

As previously reported in the Glasgow Times, the mum-of-three demanded the Scottish Government ensure all Scots hospitals introduced the service after launching a petition which gained more than 25,000 signatures.

The campaign has now been declared a success with it officially being added to the new Women's Health Plan.

Louise, who lives in East Kilbride, will now be presented with a framed letter from Dr Lisa Cameron MP as a recognition for her efforts.

She said: "I was overwhelmed. It's going to start with signposts and then we will go from there.

"It's just me myself and I couldn't believe it - I've been phoning around all different people to say 'is this really happening? is it what I think it is?'

"It just shows what one person can do and there's no time to wait. One in four women have a miscarriage and it's never really been seen as a priority. That has to change and, hopefully, now it is."

The Scottish Government said the Women's Health Plan is part of "wider work" to improve the well-being of women throughout the country, including contraception, abortion, prenatal care and menopause.

Official documents state the government will work to "establish a dignified, compassionate miscarriage service" and "ensure maternity departments have dedicated facilities for women who are experiencing unexpected pregnancy complications".

Speaking of Louise's work at the time, Dr Cameron said: “Lisa’s work is invaluable as this is an extremely emotive issue for those families who have experienced pregnancy complications and miscarriage.

"Having suffered two traumatic miscarriages myself, it is not something that I will ever forget and it seems particularly cruel that you may be placed in a unit where families are rightly celebrating the birth of their baby, when at the same time you are experiencing the traumatic bereavement and loss of yours."
