UNDERCOVER police officers spotted a man concealing something within his trousers – which turned out to be a knife.

Ryan Jordan was walking towards the plain-clothed officers on Carrbridge Drive, Wyndford, when he placed the folding lock back knife down the front of his jogging bottoms.

The 27-year-old appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court after previously pleading guilty to being in possession of the offensive weapon on January 16 last year.

Prosecutor Jennifer Gilmour said: “At around 1pm police were on patrol in plain clothing and observed the accused walking towards them.

“As he approached, he removed something from his pocket and placed it down the front of his jogging trousers.

“They thought he was concealing drugs. They stopped him and identified themselves as police. He was detained for a search.

“He stated he didn’t have drugs, but he had a knife and removed it."

Jordan’s defence solicitor said his client suffers from seizures.

He added: “He is not in employment due to his health. He recognises that this offence meets the custody threshold. However, there are alternatives available.

“He is willing to carry out unpaid work. It may give him the motivation to gain employment.”

Sheriff Jonathan Guy told Jordan: “You were quite candid and explained you were carrying the knife for your own protection. The difficulty is, if you were required to use the knife, it could have lead to extremely serious matters.

“That’s the reason a knife gives significant concern to the court. It’s the exact type of situation the court takes extremely serious due to the risk of what a knife can do."

Jordan, of Maryhill, was ordered to carry out 135 hours of unpaid work and be under social work supervision for 12 months.
