MAJOR Southside roadworks are to be halted ahead of Cop26 - but commuter chaos will resume next year, the Glasgow Times can reveal.

As previously reported, Scottish Water shut down Corkerhill Road last month for a 14-week project.

The move has prompted lengthy delays as drivers and public transport users are forced to navigate without the major road, which has been closed between Mosspark Boulevard and Mosspark Drive.

Work was set to continue for another eight weeks with the road set to reopen late October, after the original July 6 start date was postponed to July 21.

A spokesperson for the body revealed preparations for the upcoming climate conference may “impact” parts of the project.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Work on Corkerhill Road, which is part of the Glasgow Resilience Project to improve services to customers, is progressing.

“We are in discussion with Glasgow City Council’s roads department in connection with the forthcoming COP 26 event in the city, which might impact our work in Corkerhill Road and on other parts of the project.

“We will update stakeholders in due course.”

However, the Glasgow Times can now reveal the road is scheduled to reopen on October 1 to allow the summit to go ahead but will close again early next year for further work to take place.

A spokesman for the council said: “An embargo on roadworks to help keep traffic moving as freely as possible across the city is a standard measure before and during any major event.

“A traffic order for Corkerhill Road is currently in place until October 19 to allow Scottish Water to undertake essential works in that area.

“In keeping with the embargo on roadworks in the lead-up to COP 26, Scottish Water indicated to us last week that they intend to suspend their work on Corkerhill Road on October 1 and reopen the road before resuming work on January 10 next year.”
