This was the scene in Shawlands tonight as large crowds gathered to watch fireworks being set off outside a new cafe.

Police were just arriving on the scene and there were long tailbacks of cars on Kilmarnock Road.

A group of men set light to industrial-style fireworks in parking bays on the road outside of Doodh Patti Cafe.

Glasgow Times:

There were screams as the pyrotechnics shot into the night sky around 8.45pm opposite Shawlands Shopping Centre.

An initial burst of fireworks was followed by a pause before a second round of explosives was set off, going into the air just metres from residential properties.

Glasgow Times:

One eyewitness said: “This was absolute madness.

“I live nearby and came out when I heard the first lot of fireworks but I thought it had all calmed down or I would have left.

Glasgow Times:

“When the second lot started going off I jumped out of my skin - you could feel the heat off them and there were sparks landing in my hair and on my clothes.

Glasgow Times:

“There were tiny children out watching them go off.

“I cannot understand how anyone could judge that to be safe.”
