A MAN has been jailed after he told cops “f**k off or I’ll stab yous” whilst brandishing a large knife and a police-style baton.

Thomas Colligan had a minor argument with his mum in her Dennistoun home before he stormed upstairs on June 5.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that the 34-year-old began to shout, swear, bang, kick an item of furniture and smash a lamp.

Prosecutor Victoria Keel said: “His mother said she would have to call the police and the accused responded, ‘go phone the polis then, I’m no scared of them’. His mother left and attended her sister’s address and contacted police.”

When officers arrived at the property, they found the door unlocked. They identified themselves and asked who was in the house – that was noted to be in “a state of disarray”.

Colligan, who was still upstairs, shouted “f**k off scummy b******s”.

Ms Keel added: “He threw a 15lbs weight down the stairs towards officers and continued to shout and swear.

Glasgow Times:

“Police remained in the hallway and the accused could be heard extending a baton upstairs. He thereafter charged downstairs brandishing the police-style baton in his right hand and a large kitchen knife in the other.

“A police officer extended his own baton whilst updating the control room that the accused had a knife. Police shouted at the accused to stop and place the items on the ground.

“He stepped onto the stairs, however, continued to shout and swear stating ‘f*****g mon then’ and ‘f**k off or I’ll stab yous’.

“Other officers arrived, and one removed their taser from his belt and activated the red dot and pointed this at the accused.

“As a result of this, the accused dropped the knife and baton to the floor. Both were dragged away, and the accused was instructed to lie on the ground.”

After being handcuffed, Colligan continued to shout, swear and utter threats. He stated he would follow them home and find out where they lived and get their families taken “care of”.

He then challenged officers to a fight and said he wanted his handcuffs taken off to have a “square go”.

Colligan’s defence solicitor said her client’s mental health issues were at the root of his offending behaviour.

She added: “With regards to the behaviour towards police, he was assaulted the previous evening and thought these people were in the house.

“He fully accepts his behaviour and is extremely remorseful. He accepts custody is an option here. He last offended in 2012 and has significantly moved on with his life since.”

Sheriff Diana McConnell said there was no alternative to custody. She said: “Your actions were absolutely appalling.

“The police officers must have been terrified. This is a very serious offence and you have previously been convicted of assault to permanent disfigurement.”

Colligan was jailed for 225 days.
