We've started to notice a running theme when talking to some of the city's most knowledgeable drinks connoisseurs.

While gin has enjoyed the spotlight as local distillers favourite product to experiment with over the last few years, these days all talk has turned to spicier, sweeter tipple.

Is it time for rum to take centre stage?

As it turns out, our fair city is home to a number of homegrown brands who might just convince you to step away from your standard G&T.

Read a round up of our favourites below.

Brass Neck

This rum company was started by three Shawlands locals in December of 2020.

They say that their rum is 'infused with a unique selection of botanicals including tonka beans, aromatic orange peel, Scottish nettles and thistles' for a distinctly Scottish twist.

Wester Distillery

Marketing themselves as 'no-nonsense spirit', Wester Distillery can be found on Meadow Road in the West End.

The small team take pride in handling everything part of the rum-making process from sourcing to bottling by themselves.

Not only is their chocolate flavoured rum delicious in a White Russian, its also made using cocoa husks from Bare Bones Chocolate, which is another small business from right here in Glasgow.

Sugar House Rum

'Original Glasgow rum' producers Sugar House Rum say: 'We make all our rum on the outskirts of Glasgow using a premium grade of cane molasses, naturally soft Scottish water, distiller’s yeast.'

If you're feeling adventurous why not their Scotch Bonnet Rum which is infused with spicy chilli pepper for an unmistakable kick.

The Glasgow Distillery Company

Although this company sell a whole range of spirits, it's their Banditti Club Spiced Rum that has earned them a spot on the list.

Made using 'rum distilled from freshly pressed sugar cane juice on the Island of Madeira' which is then spiced and aged in oak casks in Glasgow for up to 12 months, it's no wonder it was awarded the bronze award for Best Spiced Rum at the World Rum Awards in 2020.

The Jacobite Spirit Co.

The Jacobite Spirit Company was started by a group of friends from Glasgow in 2018.

Their strong belief in the DIY way of working has resulted in wonderful creations like their Charlie's Chopper Raspberry Cranachan Spiced Rum.

Enthusiastic about keeping things local they said: "All of our ingredients come from sustainable sources and, where possible, from as close to us as we can get them.

"Everything you see when you look at our rum has been sustainably sourced - including the bottle itself, which is made in Scotland."

Island Slice

Granted, Island Slice is produced just outside of Glasgow in Dumbarton, but we're including it in our list thanks to their powerful backstory and great range of different rums from dark to light or even a pre-mixed rum punch.
