A WOMAN has died after she was hit by a police car in Motherwell.

The incident happened at around 8.20pm yesterday on Merry Street. 

The 58-year-old was taken to University Hospital Wishaw but died a short time later. 

Police have confirmed that the woman's family has been made aware.

She was hit by a marked Ford Transit van on routine duties. It did not have blue lights or sirens activated.

Police Scotland's Road policing unit has now launched an investigation and the incident has been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).

Sergeant John Tait, of the Road Policing Unit in Motherwell, said: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has any other information to come forward.

“We would be particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam or private CCTV footage from the area.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 3309 of 19 September.”
