A STREET left with catastrophic damage following heavy downpours which flooded dozens of homes could cost up to £2 million to repair, it has been claimed.

Multiple meetings between residents, councillors and officials have taken place in a bid to rectify the issue, which has plagued the street for several years.

As previously reported, 50 homes were evacuated last month after unprecedented rainfall prompted residents to become trapped in their properties.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called after “inches of water” poured into Summerhill Road.

Crews were on the scene for more than six hours as pumps tried to clear the water away.

However, it has now emerged it could cost up to £2m to resolve the problem, which has left some residents out of their homes one month on.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “There’s been numbers flying about for a while but at one of the meetings it came up that it could be as high as £2m.

“I’m not surprised but it’s quite concerning because trying to get the houses insured is a nightmare as it’s a known flooding spot.

“I feel a bit trapped. We’re at the mercy of the weather.”

Councillor Paul Carey confirmed it would “likely be millions” to repair damaged interior and exterior parts to homes as well as pipes, cars and gardens which were all hit badly in the floods.

Both Scottish Water and Glasgow City Council said they would “not speculate” on potential costs, however, they were committed to assisting the residents’ recovery from the flooding.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We fully understand how upsetting and frustrating these flooding incidents have been for residents across Drumchapel, and we are working with partner agencies to address the issue.

“In collaboration with Glasgow City Council, investigations into recent flooding incidents in Drumchapel are ongoing. Scottish Water is assessing the performance of the sewer network while Glasgow City Council is assessing surface water flows and the culverted watercourse to identify the root cause.”

A council spokesperson added: “We are aware of flooding on Summerhill Road following extremely heavy and prolonged rainfall last month. Investigations are underway to establish the causes of the flooding at this location and we are in dialogue with Scottish Water.

“We are actively working with partners to alleviate flood risk in this area, with the first phase of the Drumchapel Surface Water Management Plan due to be completed later this year.

"The outcomes from our investigations into the recent flooding on Summerhill Road will be used to review and refine, as required, the scope of the second phase of this Surface Water Management Plan.”
