A COUPLE suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a brute in the middle of the night.

Members of the public had to intervene to save the man and woman, both aged 32, following the shocking assault on a Rutherglen street at the weekend.

While walking along the town's Cathcart Road at around 12am on Sunday, they were approached by a man near to its junction with Farie Street who attacked them and then ran off, only to return a short time later in a car.

As he threatened them again, members of the public intervened to protect the couple.

Both the man and woman were taken to hospital where the former was treated for a serious facial injury.

The suspect is described as white, around 5ft 11" in height with short dark hair. He was wearing a dark-coloured polo shirt and jeans. The car was a Vauxhall Astra.

Detective Constable Stephen Gordon of Cambuslang Police Station said: “At the time of this assault, Cathcart Road was busy and I would like to appeal to any witnesses to this attack and I would also like to appeal to those who came to the couple’s assistance to contact us.
