A SECURITY guard has told of the horrifying moment he was stabbed attempting to remove a drug addict from a Glasgow high-rise block.

The 36-year-old was rushed to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary by ambulance after he knifed in the leg while carrying out his duties in a Blythswood Court building.

The man, who asked to remain anonymous because he remains an active security guard, was off work for weeks before returning to his role although, he has transferred to another building.

However, he fears other workers will also be injured if more is not done to increase security around high-rise blocks.

The dad, who works for an outside security firm, said: “There’s lots of needles lying about, you’re regularly finding them and people in sort of comas on the stairs and lifts.

“I was stabbed in the leg but, to be honest, we were all expecting something to happen, we were just waiting.

“We’re dealing with it constantly and we need to approach them and get them out the building.”

The man said he had warned Glasgow West Housing Association, which runs the three buildings in the city centre, of drug users being found in the facility after spotting a needle.

However, he claims the housing instructed him to “kick it into the corner” and leave it for the concierge to dispose of around 48 hours later.

“It was in the middle of summer,” he said “people are walking about with sliders and sandals and what if that got caught in someone’s toe or a kid.

“I dealt with it because the people who live there aren’t the ones who are doing this. They don’t deal with that, they don’t deserve it.”

The man says security staff are not being protected and has called for more to be done to ensure drug users cannot access high-rise blocks.

It comes after the Glasgow Times revealed Southside residents were living in “terror” after addicts were caught using the stairwells to inject illegal substances.

It’s understood the housing has since introduced two-person patrols around Blythswood Court since the incident.

A housing spokesperson: “There are secure door entry control systems and 29 CCTV cameras providing coverage across the [Blythswood Court] development. Night time security patrols supplement the concierge service.

“Officers from GWHA and the security company immediately attended the incident in July, and we are grateful for the prompt response of the police and ambulance service.

“The safety of our residents, our staff and our community is our utmost priority; and we continue to review safety measures with this in mind.

“We are thankful that the security guard is recovering from this unprovoked attack and we would urge anyone with any information regarding this incident to contact the Police on 101.”
