A VIGIL will be held at George Square this evening to mark the life of a primary school teacher who was tragically killed in a London Park this week.

They will acknowledge the life of Sabina Nessa and "every single woman" who has lost their lives at the hands of a violent man.

Those who wish to attend have been encouraged to bring candles, flowers, placards and "anything else" to show their respects. The vigil will take place between 7pm and 8pm.

Organisers Reclaim These Streets Glasgow said: "Since the murder of Sarah Everard, another 77 women have been murdered where the principal suspect is a man, bringing the total this year to 105. What has changed since March? We are still not safe.

"It has been clear that as a society, there remains a large portion that refuse to acknowledge the extent of the problem of male violence against women. We need to change our culture as quickly as possible to ensure that women, trans people, non-binary people and femme people are safe. This can only happen quickly if men get involved in the conversation. Men admitting that the male community is perpetuating something, is not an admission of personal guilt. It is just an acknowledgement of the historical implications of male violence against women.

"We have learnt that in order to change this situation, we need to move beyond reactive approaches where this “burn bright” response of “not one more woman” fails. We cannot have an individualistic response to the murder of women, which shifts blame and acts as a distraction rather than addressing the root of the problem which is that this is a cultural issue.

"Our thoughts go out to Sabina Nessa’s family, and everyone who loved her and knew her.”
