A crowdfunder to stage a 70m long illuminated protest sign on the River Clyde during COP 26 has been set up.

The Clyde Docks Preservation Initiative is planning on the sign which involves 3000 LED lightbulbs on the south bank of the river across from where world leaders and delegates will gather for the summit.

The aim is to raise £46,000 for the sign on the site of the old Govan Graving Docks The gins spelling out NO NEW WORLDS, and variations of the phrase, has been used in Plymouth, in Devon last year.

The Trust said it is calling for “us to cherish this world, and to stop the exploitation, extraction and ongoing colonisation that have brought us to this critical moment”.

It added: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for supporters to become part of this message. To stand with us as Glasgow and the Clyde Community speaks to the world.”

The crowdfunder has so far raised just £260 with 30 days to reach its target.

The trust added: “The words describe the intertwined damage that climate emergency and colonisation have wrought and continue to exert on our world. This message, when shared with a global audience, demands change.”

COP 26 takes place from November 1 to November 12 at the SEC.

World leaders including US President, Joe Biden, German Chancellor, Angel Merkel, and also Pope Francis and the Queen are expected to be among the more than 100 heads of state who will attend
