A FUND set up by Celtic's charity wing at the start of the pandemic to support the most vulnerable people in Glasgow has passed a major funding milestone.

Hoops fans have now netted £1.5 million for the club's Football For Good Fund (FFGF), which has helped thousands of people – including children and the city's homeless community – since March last year.

The bumper total comes just 18 months after the fund was established and amid news the Celtic Foundation today invested a further £250,000 into the emergency response initiative.

Celtic FC Foundation chief executive, Tony Hamilton, told the club's website: “We’re all looking forward to getting our lives back to where we were pre-pandemic. However, that’s not an instant fix for any of us, and the legacy of what we’ve all endured will take much longer to recover from.

“I’m delighted we’re in a position to continue with our Football For Good Fund for the remainder of 2021 in the first instance.

"I’m very grateful to everyone who has facilitated this, including Celtic supporters in every corner of the globe, our corporate and institutional funders, the Foundation’s Trustees, and everyone at the football club who has offered support."

Established to cope with the cancellation of many of the Celtic FC Foundation's normal activities, the cash pot has delivered free meals, hot drinks, and much more to those who need them most.

However, with the likes of furlough scheme and universal credit boost ending in the coming months, charity bosses have warned more will need to be done to support families across Glasgow.

“The next few months will see real hardship for many families and individuals within our communities," Tony added. "The fact that additional benefit support through Covid is ending, coupled with the rising costs of domestic fuel prices will have a major impact and it’s important that we continue to address these issues as best we can."
