DOZENS of Uber drivers have gathered on the city today as part of a nationwide strike calling for fair pay and commission.

They demonstrated on Washington Street in Glasgow as they were lashed with rain. They were joined by a Piper and a drummer as they called on the company to pay for all working, time, as drivers are only paid when they have a passenger and for the company to reduce their commission rate to 15%.

Chair of the Glasgow branch of the App Drivers and Courier Drivers Union, Eddie Grice said: "Uber drivers are taking a stand this week against Uber's contempt for worker rights.

Glasgow Times:

"Our demands are simple, Uber must comply with the Supreme Court ruling in full and cease flouting a judgement handed down from the highest court in the land."

At the demonstration, one driver said: "We've had enough of this, we're sick of this and that's we're standing in solidarity today.

"Youu don't know who you're speaking to with Uber. It's all through the app.

"We want paid for all working time, not just when we're on the job."

"We're here to show solidarity with drivers across the UK and say enough is enough."

Drivers then marched up and down Washington Street led by pipers and members of the public as well as fellow Uber drivers passing by showed their support.

Glasgow Times:

There were also chants of "What do we want? Fair Pay! When do we want it? Now!" And "No more robo firing." which refers to the alleged practice of drivers seeing their app disappear without warning.

A spokesperson for Uber said: “Following the historic trade union recognition deal with GMB, drivers have an even stronger voice within Uber.

"We are working together with our trade union partner to raise standards for drivers through greater transparency and engagement.

"GMB represents drivers in areas such as earnings, deactivations and the implementation of new worker benefits, such as holiday pay and pensions.”
