A CARE home resident in Glasgow has taken up a heartwarming hobby since she moved in.

Maureen Smith, a resident at the Golfhill Care Home in Dennistoun, has been knitting for more than 75 years.

The 81-year-old has been making hats for premature babies which are then donated to the neonatal unit at The Princess Royal Maternity.

"The lady with the wool" - as the other residents call her - has started the project to keep herself busy but found joy in the craft.

"I am now on number 29 and when I get to 30, my sister will take them down to the Maternity," she said.

"Obviously, the parents won't know it was me, but they will be thankful for the wee hats."

Maureen has been knitting since primary school, starting out with following patterns and eventually graduating to shawls and more complicated items.

She added: "I'm not as fast as I used to be, it takes maybe two days to finish one hat, maybe even three if my arms are sore."

A spokesperson for the care home said: "It makes the care home so proud to have such a kind-hearted resident.

"The others always recognise her because she always sits there with her knitting needles and wool."

Beyond being a selfless act, they added the handiwork also "helps Maureen a great deal" and has encouraged her to become more social.
