Scottish Water bosses have come under fire for failing to stop sewage flowing down a Bridge of Weir road and making residents lives a “misery”.

Village councillor James MacLaren has urged the firm to lay down a timescale for carrying out works in Horsewood Road where leaks have been streaming out of a garden at a property called Woodcote, which sits close to the junction with Glen Brae.

Damage to a manhole in the garden has led to sewage – which is carried from houses further up the road – coming out of a pipe in the back wall and running down the pavement.

Councillor MacLaren has said the problem has been going on for years but has worsened in recent weeks.

“These sewage leaks have been going on for far too long in Horsewood Road,” said the Conservative councillor.

“Scottish Water cannot continue to drag their heels on repairs that urgently need to be carried out. We’ve been told that they have been prioritised but these leaks are still occurring and flowing down the street.

“That is completely unacceptable and causing misery for residents in this area.

“The council has done a lot of work to support this landowner, but they can only go so far without action from Scottish Water which must immediately lay out a timescale for when these repairs to the manhole will finally be carried out.”

Scottish Water has insisted repairs were carried out last month but the problem is still persisting.

Bosses have apologised to the landowner at Woodcote and have vowed to fix the issue.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Repairs to the damaged sewer were initially carried out on Wednesday, September 22.

“However, a further issue has since been reported to us and additional repairs will be carried out as soon as possible.

“We apologise to the customer for any inconvenience caused and we will rectify the problem as soon as possible.”
