More than 2,600 new Covid infections have been recorded by the Scottish Government in the past 24 hours.

A total of 2,627 fresh cases have been identified, a slight fall from yesterday's total of 2,691. 

There have been a further 16 new reported deaths, a significant drop from yesterday of figure of 39. 

The number of people in hospital being treated for the virus in hospital is now 957, a fall from yesterday's total of 980.

Of those being treated in hospital, 64 are in intensive care, down five from the day before.

The overall death toll from the virus in Scotland is now 8,773 by the Scottish Government's measure, which counts those who registered a positive test in the past 28 days.

Separate figures produced by National Records of Scotland, which report deaths where Covid was mentioned on the death certificate, put the number at 11,134 as of 3 October. 

Of the 35,891 new tests for Covid-19 which reported results yesterday, 7.9 per cent were positive.

The vaccination scheme continues to roll out, with 4,240,984 people having received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 3,857,442 their second dose.
