A MAN and woman were allegedly assaulted in East Kilbride yesterday.

Officers responded to the underpass on Telford Road at around 2.55am following reports a large group of people were causing a "disturbance".

A local woman, aged 57, came out of her home to ask them to keep the noise down and was reportedly assaulted.

After witnessing this, a 68-year-old man came out to assist the woman and was allegedly assaulted with a "weapon".

The group dispersed and emergency services were called.

The 68-year-old man was transported by ambulance to Hairmyres Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment for a head injury.

The 57-year-old woman did not require hospital treatment.

Police Scotland confirmed a 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged incident and was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

Detective Constable Gary Milligan from Cambuslang CID said: "Enquiries are at an early stage to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and I am appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

"In particular I would like to speak to any local residents who saw a group of men and woman causing a disturbance in the area, or who may have private CCTV footage.
