A successful Glasgow-born businessman is taking the next step in his career journey with local firm City Building as they unveil a new programme at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Jason Pearson, 42, started working with City Building 25 years ago as an apprentice joiner directly after leaving school.

Today, he is employed as Glasgow City Council (GCC) Divisions Manager at the construction company with many qualifications under his belt.

Far from being finished with learning, Jason has now signed up for a place on the BA(Hons) Business Management course, which launched in 2021, as part of a new management development programme.

He said: “Over and above our in-house training programme, City Building is incredibly supportive of further education.

“It’s important to have a balance of skills and qualifications, especially when you progress through management levels, and expanding our skill set is definitely something we’re encouraged to do as City Building employees.

“I started the course in September of this year and it’s been a real learning curve so far. There’s a mix of online and in-person learning, so everyone can cater to their own needs.”

The course runs for four years with 16 City Building construction workers enrolled as graduate apprenticeships to study modules such as innovation and creativity, people management and diversity, and strategy, operations and supply chain management.

As for Jason’s future beyond the course, the father of five believes the skills he has learned with City Building will see him advance even further professionally.

He said: “I have an idea of what I’d like my role to look like after the course.

"Nothing is guaranteed, of course, but you’ve got to be optimistic and understand that recognised qualifications may lead to more career opportunities.

“That’s where my motivation comes from – I hope to strengthen my skills and knowledge for my current position, while also learning more about other areas of senior management and the wider industry

“I’ve had a really varied and interesting career with City Building so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing where this next chapter takes me.”
