A THUG who fought with a man as members of the public looked on has been jailed for eight months.

Stephen McAreavey, 28, and a 43-year-old man clashed near a takeaway in Glasgow's Royston on October 20 last year.

The pair came to blows with McAreavey landing punches but also received a fractured jaw in the melee.

McAreavey pleaded guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting the man.

The court heard officers were alerted about the fight near Garngad Takeaway around 5.50pm.

CCTV was later reviewed and officers noted the pair to be punching each other.

Another unidentified man was seen to kick McAreavey before all three walked away.

The man McAreavey was attacking appeared to have an eye injury.

McAreavey then engaged with the man again before being punched.

Both appeared to have blood on their faces.

The pair exchanged further punches as a "stand up fight" broke out.

Prosecutor Hannah Terrance said: "McAreavey was seen to kick the man to the ground and the altercation lasted 10 minutes.

"A number of pedestrians passing by were watching."

The pair were taken to separate hospitals after the police attended.

McAreavey failed to tell officers how he came about his injuries while the man stated that he had fought with him.

The man was treated for cuts to his face, forehead and nose as well as swelling to his face.

McAreavey meantime required six stitches to wounds to his face and cheek.

He also suffered a fracture to his left jaw.

Sheriff Joan Kerr told McAreavey, of the city's Drumchapel, that he was "foolish" to involve himself in the incident.

It was revealed he had been released from prison "within weeks" of the fight due to a previous matter.
