The Northern Ireland Protocol was designed to prevent checks along the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, following Brexit.

It came into force at the beginning of 2021 and under the protocol it was agreed that Northern Ireland would continue to follow EU rules on product standards to prevent checks along the border.

Checks would instead take place on goods entering Northern Ireland from England, Scotland or Wales.
