We're sure we can't be the only ones who impulse ordered a chessboard after watching Netflix hit The Queen's Gambit last year.
Now, the time has come to put those lockdown honed skills to the test at The Duke’s Umbrella as they launch ‘The Duke’s Gambit chess club’ together with the Glasgow University chess club.

The event will be held on the last Monday of every month, starting from tonight October 25 at 7 pm, with fellow students and avid chess fans all invited to the Argyle street Gastropub for some friendly competition.
Craig McKay, GM of The Duke’s Umbrella said: “Autumn and winter nights at The Duke’s Umbrella mean guests can experience warm, cosy hospitality and a game of chess once a month and with special offers on, we look forward to welcoming students as well as chess fans”
Expect plenty of food and drink specials to enjoy while you ponder your strategies like the 'Pawn star Martini' or a Seasonal Pie and a pint of guest Cask Ale for £15.
In line with the bar's signature flair and attention to detail, The Duke's Umbrella will be using a special 3D chess set that features some iconic Glasgow locations and sights, including Glasgow University, the Armadillo, Finnieston Crane and The Duke of Wellington statue.
The impressive Clydeside Chess Set was designed and manufactured by two Glasgow-based Product Design Engineering graduates Alex Duff and Michael O’Donnell who met at the University of Glasgow.

Emma Poliakova of Glasgow University Chess Club said: “It's amazing to see so many people interested in chess once again, a lot of new members have joined the club this semester, many of whom started playing online during lockdown and drew inspiration from the Queen’s Gambit series.
“The Duke’s Umbrella chess club is an amazing opportunity to improve or learn chess skills, as there will be a great variety of opponents to suit all playing levels from beginner to experienced tournament players!”
