FURIOUS Glaswegians have shared their outrage as the George Square Christmas market was scrapped due to COP26.

As previously reported, the Glasgow Times revealed earlier today the market would no longer be going ahead.

It's claimed concerns surrounding "activities" in the square following the UN's COP26 summit.

Despite the event lasting just two weeks, organisers Market Place Europe confirmed it was unable to guarantee access from Glasgow City Council.

Residents in Glasgow have shared their irritation at the "shocking" cancellation.

Jill Speers said: "How about cancelling Cop 26 instead?!?!

"People coming from all over the world to a conference that probably could have been done online and save the Covid risk but no, cancel the one thing that Glasgow could look forward to after the last two years. Absolute shocking decision"

Lee Gordon said: "Just cancel COP26 and let us get our lives back on track! We didn't choose to have it held in Glasgow!"

Karen Mack said: "And so it begins. What else will be cancelled due to this? Very little on to make life enjoyable now and what little spark there is they extinguish. Sickening."

Linda Moncrieff Snr said: "That's crap. I love seeing the market at Xmas. That's something else they have wasted for Glasgow."

Esther Hicks added: "Oh, the people of Glasgow have to miss out again because of other things going on. NOT FAIR."

Ceilidh McPherson said: "I’ve never been so annoyed in all my life."

Stephanie Aitchison said: "COP26 is a cop-out."

Julie Hutchison added: "What a f****** joke!!! I know what I’d prefer was going ahead!"

Chloé McGhee joked: "This doesn’t make it easy to live, laugh, love."

It comes as the Glasgow Loves Christmas team confirmed the event had been scrapped because the group was unable to come to a "mutually agreeable plan" for the George Square site.

The St Enoch market will carry on as planned from November 21 to December 23.

Organisers Market Place Europe confirmed exclusively to Glasgow Times earlier this morning that COP26 had played a part in the decision.

A spokesman said the uncertainty surrounding how many people would remain in the city following the UN summit meant the company was unable to organise an access date to begin set up operations for the market, which was due to take place from November 25 to New Year's Eve.
