CLIMATE activists are set to march through Glasgow today.

Members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) Faith, pilgrimage groups, and artists will gather in the city as part of an "opening ceremony" ahead of a series of non-violent actions scheduled to take place during COP26.

Crowds will meet at McLennan Arch on Glasgow Green at around 2pm.

XR Scotland's 'Blue Rebels' will then form a guard of honour for the pilgrims before heading towards the city centre.

Pilgrimages from a number of locations including London and Sweden will arrive in Glasgow this weekend after walking thousands of miles to raise awareness of the climate crisis.

Two Glasgow-based collaborative artists, Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich will also join marchers with a 30-metre sculptural work titled the 'Serpent of Capitalism'.

Alex Cochrane, of XR Glasgow, said: "We welcome the pilgrims of faith – and no faith – who are walking to COP26 to demand governments also walk the walk for the global south."

Yaz Ashmawi, of XR Pilgrim, said: "Countries around the world are already suffering the consequences of our historic emissions in the west, and small island states like the Maldives will be submerged by rising seas if no immediate action is taken on the climate.

"As people of faith we have a spiritual duty of care to those who are less fortunate than us, so we have been using this walk to raise money for activists in financially disadvantaged countries that are already impacted, to empower them to join this conversation themselves."

It comes just one day before world leaders are to meet in Glasgow for the UN climate summit.

The conference will run for two weeks with all eyes on the city as more than 100 heads of state discuss their approach to tackling climate change and make renewed commitments to implementing change.

We previously reported that activists from Ocean Rebellion were pictured on Friday pouring "oil" in front of the SEC where the event is taking place.
