A MAN and woman have been arrested after two young protestors abseiled off the side of Glasgow’s squinty bridge this afternoon while holding a sign that read ‘Humanity is Failing’.

They were arrested in connection with an alleged offence under the Children and Young Persons Act.

A witness told the Glasgow Times earlier this afternoon she was “dumbstruck” to see the two young children go over the side of the bridge.

She said: “The amount of people that have fell in that Clyde and lost their life and these kids were dangling over that water.

“I thought it was ridiculous that there were jet skis with police, there were police boats and there were coastguards all sitting under that bridge in fear of these kids falling."

She added: “I can understand what’s happening, I’m worried about my grandkids I’m leaving behind and what sort of world they’re going to be living in but I’m absolutely in awe.

“I’ve got grandkids of that age and I was absolutely fretted.”

The witness said the children were over the side of the bridge for around 20 minutes and praised the police for quickly attending the scene.

A Police Scotland Spokesperson said: "Officers attended a peaceful protest near to the Clyde Arc this afternoon.

"A man aged 45 and woman aged 43 were arrested in connection with an alleged offence under the Children and Young Persons Act."

A spokesperson from Glasgow Humane Society said: "Whilst we understand and respect the rights of those seeking to protest during COP26, we would encourage anyone wishing to stage a protest on or near the River Clyde to consider fully the danger that they may be putting themselves and others in.

"With over 65% of drownings taking place in inland waterways, including rivers, we feel it is important to highlight the dangers which the River Clyde pose, these include Cold Water Shock, fast-flowing currents, debris and at this time of year an increase in water levels due to rain."
