A GLASGOW couple has cheered up their local community after putting up their Christmas tree - exactly two months before the festive day.

Chris Donoghue, 36, and his fiancée, 29, from the city’s Southside, revealed that they always put their tree up in the month of October.

“We have never been one for being conventional”, Chris said. “Christmas makes us happy; it builds excitement. It's our favourite time of year, we just drag it out a bit longer than others.

“Our tree always goes up in October, I think it's great as it is a great conversation point when people are walking past. It gives people the chance to say we are nuts or think how pretty the tree is.

“I also think at a time when we need some cheer after Covid it brings about a smile or some laughter.”

This year, the couple got to work on their masterpiece before Hallowe'en, on October 25. Chris spent time sorting the tree and its lights, meanwhile, his fiancée worked on the dozens of different decorations.

Chris added: “Every decoration you pull out of storage has a different memory attached. My fiancée is from America, so she has brought some of her decorations over and we get to share the stories of where each one comes from.

“It definitely gives you a feeling of nostalgia. Christmas songs on in the background and a glass of red wine for good measure. My kids think it’s hilarious.”

When an excited passer-by recently spotted the family’s tree in the window, they stopped to take a picture.

On a local community group, they posted their photo and wrote: “I just love this family. Every year they put their tree up early and I’m so here for it. I do hope you’re on this group, please know you’ve made a heavy heart feel lighter and full of hope.”

The family have received a lot of kind messages following the post, which racked up more than 220 likes and 35 comments.

Locals also spotted a contrast, after a pumpkin was seen in the window above.
