A CHILDREN'S playground on Glasgow's Southside has been hit by firebugs.

Maxwell Park's play equipment was near the end of a refurbishment scheme that had seen £2750 raised in local donations.

Glasgow Times:

But on Friday night the park was targeted by vandals and the freshly painted and revamped section of the park badly burned.

A pile of fireworks was also seen near to the play equipment after the Pollokshields community reported another Bonfire Night marred by frightening firework use.

Pictures of the damage posted to Facebook prompted comments from frustrated locals.

Elayne Wallace said: "That’s absolutely pathetic and sick behaviour."

Barry Keenan added: "That’s appalling. Utterly mindless."

Glasgow Times:

Mary Jo Bone-Caselton wrote: "Very sorry to see this."

Lucinda Smalley said: "Such a shame, so many hours of fun lost for our little ones.

"And it takes so so long for repairs to be done.

"If only we were all more grateful and appreciative the 'free' things our country provides."

Glasgow Times:

Aims McMorrow wrote: "All the work that went into fundraising then getting this repaired.

"Heartbreaking for those involved."

The climbing equipment had been fenced off for some time but a Go Fund Me campaign earlier this year generated £2750 to repair and paint it.

Locals also appealed to the community area partnership for funding.

Glasgow City Council has been contacted for comment, as has Police Scotland.
