Pupils, parents and staff at a Glasgow school have voted to change its name.

A ballot was held at Lourdes Primary School in Cardonald, in the south of Glasgow, on the plan and it was decided by a majority to rename the school, which has a roll of 360 pupils.

Chris Cunningham, Education Convenor, said in a report to councillors: “There has been strong suggestion within the wider school community, including parents, that the name of the Catholic Patron should be added to the school name.

“Lourdes Primary School is currently named after the town in France with strong links to the Patron.

“It was, therefore, agreed that the school community could consult on a modification to the school name to include the name of the Patron and reflect the school’s strong links to the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes.”

The school was asked to vote on a name change to Our Lady of Lourdes.

In a ballot, those connected with the school were asked:

“I agree that the school name should be changed to Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School”.

Staff voted 99% in favour, pupils backed it with 70% in favour and Parents/Carers voted with 60% supporting the change.

The council’s City Administration Committee is being asked next week to approve Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School as the new name for the school.
