A JURY was shown footage of a police officer allegedly being ran over by a man on trial for attempted murder.

Constable Neil Kerr was allegedly assaulted by Zeng Xing Yu, 49, in Devonshire Gardens Lane in Glasgow’s Hyndland on July 21, 2020.

The 10 second footage appeared to show a man identified as Yu revving his engine and striking PC Kerr with a Mercedes, knocking him on the bonnet and driving away.

The attempted murder charge states PC Kerr fell to the ground all to his injury and danger of his life.

Yu denies attempting to murder PC Kerr at the High Court in Paisley.

The court heard from detective constable Robert Allen, 35, who said a team of plain clothed officers in unmarked vehicles surrounded the area to gather information for their enquiries.

DC Allen stated that he saw the driver of the Mercedes that was in the area who was identified as Yu.

He claimed that he believed drugs transaction was about to take place with two other vehicles who arrived at the scene.

DC Allen stated he and his colleague DC Stuart Nutt and PC Kerr surrounded Yu's Mercedes.

DC Allen stated he showed his lanyard to Yu and shouted "Police, stop the car."

He then claimed he tried to open Yu's door which was locked as the driver allegedly "looked me up and down."

Prosecutor John McElroy asked if there would have been any confusion as to what Yu was confronted with and the witness replied: "No."

DC Allen claimed he made a failed attempt to smash the driver's window with his baton as he was of the opinion Yu was going to drive off.

Mr McElroy asked what happened next.

He replied: "After I couldn't get the window smashed, he accelerated at a high speed.

"I didn't see PC Kerr as my focus was on the driver.

"As he drove off, the next thing I saw was him getting hit by the car."

The jurors were then shown the footage which appeared to be taken from a mobile phone.

Mr McElroy described DC Allen and DC Nutt being beside the Mercedes at the driver's door with PC Kerr at the front of it.

Mr McElroy asked what PC Kerr was doing: "He is alarmed running away from the vehicle."

The advocate asked if PC Kerr had his back to the car and the witness replied: "Yes."

DC Allen agreed that PC Kerr had his handcuffs and his radio in his hands.

The video then appeared to show PC Kerr move his body sidewards.

DC Allen added: "The vehicle began to move and PC Kerr was bracing himself for the vehicle to hit him."

Mr McElroy continued: "What we have now is the officer on the bonnet of the Mercedes.

"We see his head made contact with the bonnet.

"You see him slide up the bonnet and looks like he moves towards the car that's parked there.

"PC Kerr looks he is about to sandwiched between the two of them.

"The driver can clearly see him and the driver is continuing to drive at speed along the lane."

Yu faces a separate allegation of resisting and obstructing other officers in the lane.

Yu and Wang Wen, 30, are also charged with being concerned in the supply of cannabis on the same day.

Yu has lodged a special defence of self-defence.

The trial continues before judge Fiona Tait.
